Chapter ∞: The Beast

Stephanie stared at the wall for a long time as her mind raced. The sun rose over the gate, casting warm shadows over the lush grass. Stephanie took a deep breath, then slowly turned back to the gate. She was not sure what the cyborg had wanted her to do here, but she knew that the clone of herself had risked her life to bring her here. There had to be something important on the other side of this gate.

As soon as she stepped through, she immediately felt different. A sudden relief covered her as she left the forest behind her. The gate swung shut behind her, and a sudden rustle in the bushes ahead of her caught Stephanie’s attention. She tensed up and slowly backed away toward the gate.

“Stephanie?” asked a voice, and upon hearing this, Stephanie stopped. She knew that voice. A moment later, Rick stepped out of the bushes cautiously.

“RICK!” exclaimed Stephanie. She ran over to her ex-boyfriend and gave him a hug, which turned out to be exceedingly awkward. When she let go, she looked into his eyes. There was something different about him, but she could not put her finger on what it could be.

“I’ve missed you,” said Rick with a comical smile. “How are you?”

Tears began to form in Stephanie’s eyes as a smile slowly covered her face. “I’ve missed you,” she whispered back. She then frowned.

“What is it?” asked Rick.

“I am starting to remember something…” said Stephanie slowly. “Something about a dragon and a guy named Stan. I am not entirely sure what it means, though.”

Rick looked her up and down with a frown and said, “Interesting—”

“I recall a cyborg who looked like me telling me about a conductor? Do you know of him?” asked Stephanie hopefully.

“Unfortunately, I do not know a conductor,” said Rick, his brow furrowed.

“Oh…” said Stephanie, who seemed disappointed.

“There, there,” said Rick. “Let’s go explore this end of the gate. The other side is clearly not safe.”

“Agreed,” said Stephanie.

They walked for a time through a valley in a mountain range. A storm surged about them, and lightning flashed. Rain fell heavily from above, and the further they went, the more tired Stephanie became. Rick appeared to be struggling as well, judging by how soaked he was, yet his walk had not slowed like hers had.

“GET LOST!” boomed a voice.

Stephanie and Rick looked up, and before them was the silhouette of a massive person standing in their way. A giant. Stephanie gulped and looked up at the monstrosity.

“NOBODY IS ALLOWED IN THE SYNCHRONIZED TRAIN ACCIDENTS for NITWITS OFFICE!” boomed the giant.

“What?” asked Stephanie in confusion. “That makes even less sense than the forest’s name! Something about a secret treasure that doesn’t exist! How comes up with these names?” She then stopped. Train accident. The cogs in her head began turning as she tried to figure out why that term sounded so familiar.

The giant reached down and attempted to pick her up.

“Stop!” said Rick abruptly.

The giant thought for a moment as if it were contemplating its choices.
